Status CR
Habitat destruction and degradation through conversion to agriculture, road development, and possible predation by Black Rat Rattus rattus, Mona Monkey Cercopithecus mona, African Civet Civettictis civetta and Weasel Mustela nivalis are the main threats.

Voice
A brief series of 4 - 5 short, 2-note canary-like whistles, the second note higher pitched. Similar to that of the Principe Seedeater (Crithagra rufobrunnea) but deeper in tone, simpler and more repetitive.

No subspecies.
Recent genetic evidence indicates close relationship to Principe Seedeater (Crithagra rufobrunnea), suggesting that, pending review of entire genus, this species may be better placed in Serinus.
