Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Rufous-naped Lark (Mirafra africana), possibly also including Somali Lark (Mirafra somalica). Sometimes considered conspecific with Rufous-naped Lark (Mirafra africana), but the two are morphologically and vocally distinct, with no intermediate forms where their ranges meet in Kenya and northern Tanzania.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

gallarum Hartert, 1907 - Ethiopia (Rift Valley southern from Awash).
kathangorensis Cave, 1940 - Extreme south-eastern Sudan.
kidepoensis Macdonald, 1940 - Extreme southern Sudan and north-eastern Uganda.
hypermetra (Reichenow, 1879) - Kenya, southern Somalia and north-eastern Tanzania.
