Subspecies
Subspecies rather poorly differentiated except for atriceps.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
rivolii (Boissonneau, 1840) - North-western Venezuela (Sierra de Perijá) southern in Andes to east-central Colombia.
meridae (Chapman, 1923) - Western Venezuela (Mérida, Táchira).
quindiuna (Chapman, 1923) - Andes of north-central Colombia.
brevirostris (Taczanowski, 1875) - South-western Colombia south to central Peru.
atriceps (Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1876) - South-eastern Peru and western and central Bolivia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Black-crowned Woodpecker (Colaptes atriceps).
zuliensis (Aveledo & Perez, 1989) - Sierra de Perijá (Colombia-Venezuela border).
