Subspecies
Racial allocation of birds from Amazonian slope of eastern Andes, in Colombia, and of others in San Martín, in northern Peru, not yet determined. Both populations tentatively placed with chaplinae, but further study is required.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
haplonota Sclater, 1877 - Northern Venezuela in interior chain in Lara, and coastal mountains (except Paria Peninsula).
parambae Rothschild, 1900 - Pacific slope from western Colombia (Risaralda) to southern Ecuador (El Oro).
chaplinae Robbins & Ridgely, 1986 - Amazonian slope of eastern Andes in Colombia, and eastern Ecuador and northern Peru (Cordillera del Cóndor in extreme north, also San Martín).
