Subspecies
Sister-species relationship with Ivory-billed Woodcreeper (Xiphorhynchus flavigaster) has been suggested on basis of molecular data. Subspecies eximius synonymized with nominate by most recent authors, but this resulted in part from apparently mistaken belief that specimens from Caribbean slope in western Panama represented eximius instead of nominate.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
lachrymosus (Lawrence, 1862) - Caribbean slope of Central America in eastern Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama (locally also Pacific slope from Canal Zone east to Darién), also western Colombia (in lower Atrato Valley and along Pacific coast) and north-western Ecuador (south to northern Pichincha, once to northern Manabí).
eximius (Hellmayr, 1903) - Pacific slope of south-western Costa Rica and adjacent western Panama.
alarum Chapman, 1915 - Lowlands of northern Colombia (valleys of upper R Sinú, lower R Cauca and middle R Magdalena east to Santander).
