Subspecies
Genus probably closest to Premnornis, and this supported by anatomical data. Both genera merged with Margarornis by some authors. Forms a superspecies with Spotted Barbtail (Premnoplex brunnescens), and sometimes treated as conspecific.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
tatei Chapman, 1925 - Cordillera de Caripe in north-eastern Anzoátegui and southern Sucre, and northern Monagas (Cerro Negro), in north-eastern Venezuela.
pariae Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1949 - Cerros Humo and Azul, in Paria Peninsula (northern Sucre). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Paria Barbtail (Premnoplex pariae).
