Habitat
Coastal and cliff herbfields, Carex grassland, tussock-herbfields, forest. From sea-level - 300 m.

Estimated population is 2,000 (2010) and stable.
Status VU
Predation by introduced mammals (from nearby Adams Island) is a potential threat.

Voice
A loud 'crek' rapidly repeated about 10 times. A loud, sharp, short whistle repeated about 50 times in about 12 seconds.
Subspecies
Sometimes placed in genus Dryolimnas. Forms superspecies with Brown-banded Rail (Lewinia mirifica) and Lewin's Rail (Lewinia pectoralis).
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Lewin's Rail (Lewinia pectoralis).
No subspecies.
