Subspecies
Placed in the genus Musophaga by some authorities. Formerly awarded monotypic genus Gallirex. Subspecies intergrade in Zambezi Valley.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
chlorochlamys (Shelley, 1881) - South-eastern Kenya through Tanzania, Burundi and Rwanda to Zambia (Victoria Falls, Luano and Luangwa Valleys), Malawi and northern Mozambique.
porphyreolophus (Vigors, 1831) - Zimbabwe and Mozambique south to eastern Transvaal and Natal.
