Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Berylline Hummingbird (Amazilia beryllina). Reports of hybridization in a small zone of sympatry in Guatemala and El Salvador seem to be unproven, and may be erroneously based on variable tail coloration of that species. In recent literature only two subspecies have been recognized, with impatiens from Costa Rica ignored, perhaps because only two specimens exist; however, morphological characters indicate that it should be considered valid. Subspecies show highly disjunct distribution.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

guatemalae (Dearborn, 1907) - South-eastern Mexico (south-eastern Chiapas) to southern Guatemala.
cyanura (Gould, 1859) - Southern Honduras, eastern El Salvador and north-western Nicaragua.
impatiens (Bangs, 1906) - North-western and central Costa Rica.
