Subspecies
Subspecies decora sometimes considered a separate species, on grounds mainly of morphological differences, combined with distribution.
Proposed subspecies costaricensis (Nicaragua to Panama) inseparable from nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
amabilis (Gould, 1853) - North-eastern Nicaragua to north-central Colombia and Ecuador west of Andes; possibly south-eastern Honduras.
decora Salvin, 1891 - Pacific slope of south-western Costa Rica and extreme western Panama. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Charming Hummingbird (Amazilia decora).
