Subspecies
Distinctive, with no very close relatives. Belongs to the so-called "croaking group" of Ramphastos species, which also includes Red-breasted Toucan (Ramphastos dicolorus), Keel-billed Toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus), Choco Toucan (Ramphastos brevis) and Channel-billed Toucan (Ramphastos vitellinus). Subspecies albogularis poorly differentiated.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
toco Müller, 1776 - The Guianas and north-eastern Brazil, southern coastally to Pará, up Amazon west to Manaus, including large lower tributaries; south-eastern Peru.
albogularis Cabanis, 1862 - Bolivia and central Brazil (Mato Grosso and Piauí) south to Argentina (Tucumán, Santa Fe) and south-eastern Brazil (south-eastern Rio Grande do Sul).
