Subspecies
A distinctive species within the so-called "croaking group" of Ramphastos species, which also includes Red-breasted Toucan (Ramphastos dicolorus), Keel-billed Toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus), Channel-billed Toucan (Ramphastos vitellinus) and Toco Toucan (Ramphastos toco). Probably most closely related to Keel-billed Toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus). A sibling species of Yellow-throated Toucan (Ramphastos ambiguus), though not very closely related to it. Was long considered to be a subspecies of Yellow-throated Toucan (Ramphastos ambiguus), but differs significantly in several aspects, notably voice.
