Status NT
Destruction of lowland and hill forests by logging is the nain threat.

Subspecies
Genus name sometimes given as Aplornis.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

maxwellii Forbes, HO, 1900 - Nendo (Santa Cruz), in west-central Santa Cruz Is.
zelandica (Quoy & Gaimard, 1830) - Vanikoro, in southern Santa Cruz Is.
rufipennis Layard, EL, 1881 - Banks Is and northern and central Vanuatu (south to Efat�).
