Subspecies
A member of a species group that includes also Fawn-breasted Whistler (Pachycephala orpheus), Bare-throated Whistler (Pachycephala nudigula), Vogelkop Whistler (Pachycephala meyeri), Sclater's Whistler (Pachycephala soror), Lorentz's Whistler (Pachycephala lorentzi), Regent Whistler (Pachycephala schlegelii), Golden Whistler (Pachycephala pectoralis), New Caledonian Whistler (Pachycephala caledonica), Tongan Whistler (Pachycephala jacquinoti), Samoan Whistler (Pachycephala flavifrons), Black-tailed Whistler (Pachycephala melanura) and Golden-backed Whistler (Pachycephala aurea). Subspecies exhibit distinct male and female plumage differences, and possibly better treated as two separate species.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • implicata Hartert, 1929   -  Guadalcanal, in southern Solomon Is.
  • richardsi Mayr, 1932   -  Bougainville I. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Bougainville Hooded Whistler (Pachycephala richardsi).
