Subspecies
May form a superspecies with White-throated Munia (Euodice malabarica) and often treated as conspecific.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
cantans (Gmelin, 1789) - Central and southern Mauritania and Senegambia east to Niger, northern Nigeria, Chad and western and southern Sudan. Also southern Algeria (origin of birds uncertain).
orientalis (Lorenz von Liburnau, L & Hellmayr, 1901) - Extreme south-eastern Egypt (Gebel Elba), eastern Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somalia, northern Uganda, Kenya and northern Tanzania, and southern Arabian Peninsula (south-western Saudi Arabia, Yemen, western Oman).
