Population
Estimated population is 2,600,000 - 2,900,000 (2010).
Status LC
Habitat degradation due to oil pollution, drainage, peat-extraction and changing land management practices in breeding areas, human disturbance, hunting and predation by American mink Neovison vison on islands are the main threats.

Food
Mainly molluscs and aquatic insects and their larvae and some plant material.
Voice
Male, usually silent, but a low whistle during courtship. Female, a harsh 'karr' especially in flight.

Nest
Composed of vegetation, located on the ground, in rushes or tussocks of grass, under bushes, near water, and well hidden. Often nest with gull and tern colonies.
Eggs (Guide)
6 - 14; matt, grey-green; ellipsoidal. Incubation: about 24 days; by male.
Subspecies
Considered by some to form superspecies with Ring-necked Duck (Aythya collaris) and New Zealand Scaup (Aythya novaeseelandiae). Hybridization, especially with other Aythya species often recorded.
