Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry grassland, hot desert. From sea-level - 2,000 m.
Egypt, Ethiopia, Israel (B), Jordan (B) (NB), Oman (B), Palestinian Authority Territories (B), Saudi Arabia (B), Sudan, Syria (B), United Arab Emirates (B), Yemen (B).
Vagrant to Lebanon.
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Subspecies intermedia sometimes included within nominate heyi .
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
heyi (Temminck, 1825) - Jordan Valley south to Sinai Peninsula and through western Saudi Arabia.
nicolli Hartert, 1919 - Northern Egypt, east of R Nile, south to central Egypt.
cholmleyi Ogilvie-Grant, 1897 - Central Egypt, east of R Nile, south to northern Sudan.
intermedius Hartert, 1917 - Southern Arabia, from Aden east to Muscat, Oman, and Musundam Peninsula (UAE).
