Breeds eastern Transbaikalia and eastern Mongolia east to south-eastern Russia (southern Amurland, southern Ussuriland), south to central and eastern China and Korea, and sporadically western Japan. Non-breeding Malay Peninsula and Sumatra.

May form a superspecies with Narcissus Flycatcher (Ficedula narcissina) and has previously been considered conspecific. Attempted hybridization between the two has been recorded in Japan.
