Subspecies
Alcippe castaneceps (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Rufous-winged Fulvetta (Schoeniparus castaneceps) and Black-crowned Fulvetta (Schoeniparus klossi) following Collar (2006).
Formerly treated as conspecific with closely related Black-crowned Fulvetta (Schoeniparus klossi). Birds of this species in far eastern Myanmar, north-western Laos and central and southern Yunnan (China) have not yet been assigned to subspecies.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
castaneceps (Hodgson, 1837) - Nepal east to Bhutan and all north-eastern Indian hill states, southern China (south-eastern Xizang, western and north-western Yunnan), north, west, eastern and south-eastern Myanmar and north-western and western Thailand.
exul Delacour, 1932 - Northern Thailand, north, central and south-western Laos, northern Vietnam (Tonkin, northern Annam) and southern China (south-eastern Yunnan east to western Guangxi).
stepanyani Eames, JC, 2002 - South-eastern Laos and central Vietnam.
