Subspecies
Plumage similarities and biogeography suggest that sister-species is Patagonian Canastero (Pseudasthenes patagonica).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

goodalli (Marin, Kiff & Pe�a, 1989) - Northern Chile (south-western Antofagasta).
humicola (Kittlitz, 1830) - North-central Chile (Atacama south to northern Maule); old record from western Argentina (northern Mendoza) requires confirmation.
polysticta (Hellmayr, 1925) - South-central Chile (southern Maule, Concepci�n, Arauco, Malleco).
