Habitat
Shrubby growth in clearings and forest borders. From 750 - 1,850 m.
Panama (B) (NB).
Mountains of west-central Panama.

Estimated population is 250 - 999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status EN
Habitat destruction and degradation through conversion to agriculture, cattle-grazing, over-use of pesticides and fires, is the main threat.

Subspecies
Probably forms a superspecies with Scintillant Hummingbird (Selasphorus scintilla). Formerly considered closely related to subspecies simoni of Volcano Hummingbird (Selasphorus flammula).
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Male Glow-throated Hummingbird (Selasphorus ardens) which has red-orange gorget and rufous tail. Female Scintillant Hummingbird (Selasphorus scintilla) which is paler below and has more rufous edging on central rectrices.
