Several other subspecies have been described, but their validity is doubtful: pallidor and kalaharica normally included in nominate levaillantoides; cunenensis in jugularis; and archeri in lorti. Subspecies gutturalis (incorporating lorti) has been considered to constitute a separate species. Francolinus gariepensis is a synonym for present species.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
gutturalis (Smith, 1836) - Northern Ethiopia.
lorti (Sharpe, 1897) - Sudan east through southern Ethiopia to Somalia, and south to Uganda.
jugularis (Büttikofer, 1889) - South-western Angola and northern Namibia.
levaillantoides (A. Smith, 1836) - Eastern Namibia, southern Botswana, northern and western South Africa and Lesotho.
