Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest, swamp forest, mangroves, rural gardens, plantations. From sea-level - 1,525 m.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2020) and stable.

Subspecies
Macronous gularis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Pin-striped Tit-Babbler (Mixornis gularis) and Bold-striped Tit-Babbler (Mixornis bornensis) following Collar (2006).

Formerly treated as conspecific with Pin-striped Tit-Babbler (Mixornis gularis).

Proposed subspeciess ruficoma (from islands of Bangka and Belitung) and pontius (from Pulau Laut, off south-eastern Borneo) regarded as synonyms of nominate.

The following 8 subspecies are recognised:

  • zopherus (Oberholser, 1917)   -  Anamba Is, east of Peninsular Malaysia.
  • everetti (Hartert, 1894)   -  Bunguran, in northern Natuna Is.
  • zaperissus (Oberholser, 1932)   -  Northern Natunas (except Bunguran).
  • argenteus (Chasen and Kloss, 1930)   -  Banggi I and Malawali I, off northern Borneo.
  • cagayanensis (Guillemard, 1885)   -  Cagayan Sulu I, in south-western Sulu Sea.
  • bornensis (Bonaparte, 1850)   -  Borneo (except Mt Kinabalu area), including Pulau Laut, also Bangka I and Belitung I (off eastern Sumatra).
  • montanus (Sharpe, 1887)   -  Mt Kinabalu area, in northern Borneo.
  • javanicus (Cabanis, 1850)   -  Western and central Java.
