Chubb's Cisticola (Cisticola chubbi) [XC266021]
by Martin St-Michel from Echuya Central Forest Reserve, Kabale, Western Region, Uganda (call)
Subspecies
Chubb's Cisticola (Cisticola chubbi) and Brown-backed Cisticola (Cisticola discolor) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include discolor as a subspecies of Chubb's Cisticola (Cisticola chubbi).
Forms a superspecies with Hunter's Cisticola (Cisticola hunteri) and Black-lored Cisticola (Cisticola nigriloris), and apparently also with undescribed "Kilombero Cisticola" from south-eastern Tanzania. Western subspecies adametzi and discolor sometimes considered to represent a separate species, but appear vocally similar to eastern subspecies. Further study is needed.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
adametzi Reichenow, 1910 - Highlands of south-eastern Nigeria and south-western Cameroon.
discolor Sjöstedt, 1893 - Mt Cameroon. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Brown-backed Cisticola (Cisticola discolor).
chubbi Sharpe, 1892 - Highlands of eastern DRCongo, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, western Kenya and north-western Tanzania.
marungensis Chapin, 1932 - Marungu Mts, in south-eastern DRCongo.
