Rufous-breasted Leaftosser (Sclerurus scansor) [XC29536]
by Marcos Melo from Araripe National Forest, Crato, Cear\u00e1 State, Brazil (call, song, short song)
Subspecies
Often placed next to Black-tailed Leaftosser (Sclerurus caudacutus) in traditional classifications, this based on similarity of throat patterns. However, other plumage similarities and biogeography suggest that this and Grey-throated Leaftosser (Sclerurus albigularis) are sister-species.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
cearensis Snethlage, E, 1924 - North-eastern Brazil (Ceará south to northern Bahia). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Ceara Leaftosser (Sclerurus cearensis).
scansor (Ménétries, 1835) - Central, central-eastern and south-eastern Brazil (Mato Grosso, Goiás and Minas Gerais south to Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
