Eastern Peru from lower R Ucayali, east to western Amazonian Brazil (east to R Tejo in upper R Juruá area of Acre) and south to western Bolivia (La Paz).

Subspecies
Has been thought to form a superspecies with Red-headed Barbet (Eubucco bourcierii), and long considered conspecific, but appears to be very distinct species, only distantly allied to Red-headed Barbet (Eubucco bourcierii). No close relatives within genus.
