South-western and central China (south-western Xinjiang and southern and eastern Qinghai-Xizang Plateau east to Ningxia and Gansu, south to southern and south-eastern Xizang, north-eastern Yunnan and western Sichuan), also south-eastern Ladakh, northern Nepal and Sikkim.

Until recently placed with the crows in family Corvidae, often in the ground-jay genus Podoces. Osteological, morphological and vocal characters, however, indicate that it belongs in present family, a treatment supported by mitochondrial DNA evidence. Eastern birds sometimes separated as subspecies saxicola.
