Subspecies
Differences in display and behaviour do not suggest particularly close relationship with Black-tailed Trainbearer (Lesbia victoriae). Probably closely related to Ramphomicron. Subspecies eucharis, formerly thought to have come from Colombia, was provisionally placed in Black-tailed Trainbearer (Lesbia victoriae). Subspecific differences rather weak.
Proposed subspecies chlorura is synonym of eucharis; boliviana is synonym of nominate.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
gouldii (Loddiges, 1832) - Andes of north-eastern and south-central Colombia; old record from Venezuela (Mérida).
gracilis (Gould, 1846) - Andes of Ecuador.
pallidiventris (Simon, 1902) - Andes of northern Peru.
eucharis (Bourcier and Mulsant, 1848) - Mountains near Huánuco (central Peru).
nuna (Lesson, 1832) - Andes of south-western Peru and northern Bolivia.
