Subspecies
Hylocharis grayi (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Gray's Hummingbird (Amazilia grayi) and Humboldt's Hummingbird (Amazilia humboldtii) following SACC (2005).
Formerly segregated in monospecific genus Eucephala. Subspecies are so different in coloration, measurements and ecology that they should perhaps be considered separate species, probably forming a superspecies.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- humboldtii (Bourcier & Mulsant, 1852) - Extreme south-eastern Panama to north-western Ecuador. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Humboldt's Hummingbird (Amazilia humboldtii).
- grayi (DeLattre & Bourcier, 1846) - Western Colombia and northern Ecuador.
