Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 1,000 - 3,000 m.
Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela.

Subspecies
Possibly forms a superspecies with Green-tailed Emerald (Chlorostilbon alice) and Short-tailed Emerald (Chlorostilbon poortmani). Subspecies ignotus sometimes considered synonymous with Green-tailed Emerald (Chlorostilbon alice), or treated as a hybrid.
Birds of Colombia and Ecuador have been separated as subspecies acuticaudus, but doubtfully valid.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- ignotus Todd, 1942 - North-western Venezuela, from coastal range south to highlands of extreme south-eastern Lara.
- stenurus (Cabanis & Heine, 1860) - North-western Venezuela (Trujillo, Mérida, Táchira) and north-eastern Colombia (Norte de Santander possibly south to western Meta); north-eastern Ecuador (Baeza).
