Subspecies
Populations of eastern Panama and western Colombia sometimes separated as subspecies munda, but morphological differences are based on a zone of character introgression between subspecies salvini and heterura.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

salvini Gould, 1868 - Costa Rica to western Colombia.
heterurus Gould, 1868 - Western Andes from south-western Colombia to western Ecuador.
aquila (Bourcier, 1847) - Eastern Andes from Colombia to northern Peru.
