Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status NT
Habitat destruction and degradation through forest clearing for oil palm plantations, cattle ranching and logging are the main threats.

Subspecies
In past, sometimes placed in genus Ametrornis. Closely related to Needle-billed Hermit (Phaethornis philippii), replacing it at higher elevations. Also related to Tawny-bellied Hermit (Phaethornis syrmatophorus). Significant differences in size between some populations may be the result of long-term isolation.
