The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
autumnalis (Linnaeus, 1758) - South-eastern Texas to central Panama. Also known as fulgens.
discolor P.L. Sclater and Salvin, 1873 - Eastern Panama to South America, south to Ecuador in the west and northern Argentina in the east.
