Subspecies
Sometimes placed in genus Thamnolaea or Myrmecocichla. Subspecies harterti distinctive. If vocally different, may merit species status.
Proposed subspecies leucolaema (Rwanda and Burundi) merged with nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- harterti Neunzig, 1926 - Angola.
- arnotti (Tristram, 1869) - Rwanda and Burundi south to Zambia, central Mozambique and north-eastern South Africa.
