Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.
Status NT
Habitat loss is the main threat. The use of secondary forest and brushwood of abandoned plantations implies that it is not immmediately threatened.

Subspecies
Subspecies rupatensis poorly differentiated (and degree of violet tinge on upperparts of male possibly an unreliable character, as individually variable).

rupatensis Brüggemann, 1877 - Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and western Borneo.
