Voice
Nasal 'kíu' calls very similar to those of White-flanked Antwren (Myrmotherula axillaris).

Subspecies
Taxonomic validity questioned by various authors. Was initially thought by some to be a hybrid between Unicolored Antwren (Myrmotherula unicolor) and subspecies luctuosa of White-flanked Antwren (Myrmotherula axillaris), and later considered possibly a variant of latter. Moreover, some uncertainty over whether recent observations refer to same taxon as original type specimen. More research, including thorough analysis of recent tape recordings, is needed in order to determine its true taxonomic status. All mentioned taxa are often grouped with Slaty Antwren (Myrmotherula schisticolor), Rio Suno Antwren (Myrmotherula sunensis), Salvadori's Antwren (Myrmotherula minor), Ihering's Antwren (Myrmotherula iheringi), Plain-winged Antwren (Myrmotherula behni), Ashy Antwren (Myrmotherula grisea), Unicolored Antwren (Myrmotherula unicolor), Alagoas Antwren (Myrmotherula snowi), Long-winged Antwren (Myrmotherula longipennis), Band-tailed Antwren (Myrmotherula urosticta) and Grey Antwren (Myrmotherula menetriesii) as the "grey antwren assemblage", although this grouping possibly not monophyletic.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Male of sympatric luctuosa of White-flanked Antwren (Myrmotherula axillaris) has grey, not white, flanks and is extensively black below. Its tail is tipped white, while the rectrices of Rio de Janeiro Antwren (Myrmotherula fluminensis) are unmarked.
