Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Foothill Antwren (Epinecrophylla spodionota) and Western Stipple-throated Antwren (Epinecrophylla haematonota). Genetic, morphological and behavioural analyses indicate that the three are part of a monophyletic group that also includes Brown-bellied Antwren (Epinecrophylla gutturalis), Checker-throated Antwren (Epinecrophylla fulviventris), White-eyed Antwren (Epinecrophylla leucophthalma), Western Ornate Antwren (Epinecrophylla ornata) and Rufous-tailed Antwren (Epinecrophylla erythrura) (the "stipple-throated antwren assemblage"), and which may not be closely related to other species placed in the genus.
