Pig-like grunts, raucous screeches, 'whuh-whaika, whu-whaika', repeated many times to a steady rhythm.

A flat structure, composed of sticks on a low branch of a mangrove.
Eggs (Guide )
4 - 5; pink with fine chestnut spots; oval; about 53 x 36 mm.
Subspecies
Genus sometimes enlarged to include Aramides , Amaurolimnas and Gymnocrex .
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
castaneoventris Gould, 1844 - Northern coasts of Australia from north western Australia through NT to north-western Qld.
sharpei Rothschild, 1906 - Aru Islands.
