Subtropical and tropical lowland abd montane moist forest. From 1,100 - 2,200 m.

Range (Guide)
Indonesia (B), Papua New Guinea (B).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with White-striped Forest-rail (Rallicula leucospila) and Forbes's Forest-rail (Rallicula forbesi).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • mayri (Hartert, 1930)   -  Cyclops Mts, north-eastern Irian Jaya.
  • carmichaeli Diamond, 1969   -  Torricelli and Bewani Mts, north-western Papua New Guinea.
