Subspecies
BirdLife International retain Zebra Dove (Geopelia striata) and Peaceful Dove (Geopelia placida) as separate species. Peaceful Dove (Geopelia placida) is considered a subspecies of Zebra Dove (Geopelia striata) by Christidis and Boles (1994).

Despite superficial resemblances to Streptopelia, genus probably most closely related to bronzewing group (Phaps and allies), based on behaviour. Forms a superspecies with Zebra Dove (Geopelia striata) and Barred Dove (Geopelia maugeus) and all have sometimes been considered conspecific.

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Zebra Dove (Geopelia striata).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • papua Gould, 1844   -  Southern New Guinea. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Zebra Dove (Geopelia striata).
  • placida Gould, 1844   -  Northern and eastern Australia. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Zebra Dove (Geopelia striata).
  • clelandi Mathews, 1912   -  Pilbara Region from De Grey River to Murchison district, WA, Australia. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Zebra Dove (Geopelia striata).
