Subspecies
Closely related to Moustached Wren (Pheugopedius genibarbis) and treated as conspecific by some authorities, but has quite distinct song and differs also in habitat requirements.
The following 8 subspecies are recognised:
consobrinus (Madarász, 1904) - Sierra de Perijá and Andes of western Venezuela (southern Lara south to Mérida).
ruficaudatus (von Berlepsch, 1883) - Northern Venezuela (central Falcón and Yaracuy east to Miranda).
tachirensis (Phelps & Gilliard, 1941) - Southern Táchira (Páramo de Tamá), in south-western Venezuela.
saltuensis Bangs, 1910 - Western and central Andes of Colombia.
yananchae (Meyer de Schauensee, 1951) - Eastern Nariño (Yananchá), in south-western Colombia.
mystacalis (Sclater, 1860) - Southern Colombia and western Ecuador.
macrurus (Allen, JA, 1889) - Eastern slope of central Andes and western slope of eastern Andes, in Colombia.
amaurogaster Chapman, 1914 - Eastern slope of eastern Andes, in Colombia.
