Subspecies
Closely allied to Neopipo and Hirundinea. Differences among subspecies vieillotioides, spadix and pariae appear subtle at best, and these taxa perhaps should be merged. Differences between nominate and pyrrhopterus also slight, and may reflect clinal variation from north to southern within Andes.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • assimilis (Allen, JA, 1900)   -  Northern Colombia (Santa Marta).
  • vieillotioides (Lafresnaye, 1848)   -  North-western Venezuela.
  • spadix Wetmore, 1939   -  Mountains of north-central and north-eastern Venezuela.
  • pariae Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1949   -  Paria Peninsula, in north-eastern Venezuela.
  • pyrrhopterus (Hartlaub, 1843)   -  Andes of western Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
  • cinnamomeus (D'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837)   -  Andes of eastern Peru, Bolivia and north-western Argentina.
