Inland wetlands, temperate shrublands. From 3,000 - 5,500 m.

Range (Guide)

Bhutan, China (mainland), India, Nepal, Pakistan.

Unknown to Afghanistan.

Himalayas (from Baltistan and Ladakh east to Bhutan) and south-western and central China (southern and south-eastern Xizang east to north-eastern Qinghai, northern Gansu and western Sichuan).

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Apparently no close affinities within genus. Geographical variation slight. Proposed subspecies muraria (described from north-western Kashmir), fusca (from central Xizang, in south-western China) and beicki (from northern Gansu, in north-central China) show little difference from populations elsewhere in range.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

muraria Meinertzhagen, R & Meinertzhagen, A, 1926 - Western Himalayas.
rubeculoides (Moore, 1854) - Himalayas.
fusca Mayr, 1927 - Mts. of eastern Tibet and western China (Xinjiang, Gansu and Shaanxi).
