Breeds in mountains from extreme western China (western Xinjiang) south to north-eastern Afghanistan and eastern in Himalayas to north-eastern India (Arunachal Pradesh), and in southern and eastern China (central Gansu eastern probably to Nei Mongol and western Hebei, south to southern and eastern Xizang, Yunnan, western Guizhou and western Hubei); probably also in extreme northern and north-eastern Myanmar. Winters south to northern India (south to Rajasthan and Assam), Bangladesh and northern Thailand.

Originally named as Anthus pelopus, but that name invalid. Relationships uncertain. Possibly forms a clade with Meadow Pipit (Anthus pratensis), Red-throated Pipit (Anthus cervinus), Water Pipit (Anthus spinoletta), Rock Pipit (Anthus petrosus) and American Pipit (Anthus rubescens).
