Vagrant to Djibouti, Finland, Greece, Italy, Japan, Sweden, United Kingdom, Yemen.
Breeds from west-central Turkey east to Armenia, southern Azerbaijan and western and southern Iran and, east of Caspian Sea, to south-eastern Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, north-eastern Iran and northern Afghanistan; also isolated populations in Lebanon, northern Israel, southern Syria and northern Iraq. Winters in north-eastern Africa, southern Middle East and northern Arabia east to north-western India.

Geographical variation slight; rufous-tinged birds from Asia Minor described as subspecies rufescens and paler ones from eastern Iran and Afghanistan as torquata, but considered insufficiently distinct to merit subspecific separation.
