Subspecies
Proposed subspecies ripleyi (from Pakistan east to western Nepal) treated as a synonym of validirostris, and lingshuiensis (Hainan) synonymized with ricketti. Populations in Peninsular Malaysia currently included in subspecies cameranoi, but are in fact intermediate between that taxon and schauenseei. Individuals of this species recorded in south-west, north-eastern and south-eastern Thailand, south-western Cambodia, southern Laos and central Vietnam (central Annam) have apparently not been assigned to subspecies.

The following 8 subspecies are recognised:

  • validirostris (Temminck, 1835)   -  North-eastern Pakistan eastern in western Himalayas to Bhutan and all north-eastern Indian hill states, adjacent southern China (south-eastern Xizang) and north-western and western Myanmar.
  • ricketti Ogilvie-Grant, 1904   -  North-eastern Myanmar, southern and south-eastern China (west-central Sichuan south to western and north-western Yunnan and east to northern Fujian, also Hainan), northern Thailand and northern Indochina.
  • aeralatus Blyth, 1855   -  Eastern and south-eastern Myanmar (including northern Tenasserim) and north-western and western Thailand.
  • annamensis Robinson and Kloss, 1919   -  Southern Vietnam (southern Annam) and adjacent extreme eastern Cambodia.
  • schauenseei Deignan, 1946   -  Southern Thailand.
  • cameranoi Salvadori, 1879   -  Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra.
  • robinsoni Chasen and Kloss, 1931   -  Borneo.
  • flaviscapis (Temminck, 1836)   -  Java.
