Habitat
River floodplain tall grassland, often seasonally inundated or in close proximity to rivers and pools, prefering dense, contiguous, undisturbed stands of grass. Generally avoids drier, semi-open, short grassland habitat with scattered bushes.

India (B) (NB), Myanmar, Nepal (B) (NB), Pakistan (B) (NB).

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation through drainage and conversion of natural swamps and wet grassland for agriculture and grazing by domestic stock, is the main threat.

Subspecies
Previously placed in genus Moupinia.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

scindicum (Harington, 1915) - Indus Plains, in Pakistan.
griseigulare (Hume, 1877) - Southern Nepal and north-eastern India.
altirostre (Jerdon, 1862) - Northern and southern Myanmar (Irrawaddy-Sittang river plain).
