Bangladesh, Bhutan, China (mainland), India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Vietnam.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Proposed subspecies grosvenori (from western Nepal) synonymized with occidentalis.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • occidentalis Hartert, 1909   -  North-eastern Pakistan (Murree Hills) eastern in Himalayas to western Nepal.
  • rufogularis (Gould, 1835)   -  Central Nepal east to Bhutan and north-eastern India (central Arunachal Pradesh).
  • rufitincta Koelz, 1952   -  Meghalaya, in north-eastern India.
  • rufiberbis Koelz, 1954   -  North-eastern India (south-eastern Arunachal Pradesh), northern and north-eastern Myanmar and southern China (western Yunnan).
  • assamensis Hartert, 1909   -  North-eastern Indian hill states south of R Brahmaputra (except Meghalaya), and north-western Myanmar.
  • intensior (Delacour & Jabouille, 1930)   -  North-western Vietnam (western Tonkin).
  • grosvenori Ripley, 1950   -  Himalayas of western Nepal.
