Habitat
Terraced cultivation, low thorny scrub, rank grass and bracken, often near forest edges. From 2,400 - 3,600 m, moving down to 1,200 m in winter.

China (mainland) (B), India (B), Pakistan (B).

Vagrant to Tajikistan (B).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat destruction and degradation through agricultural expansion and overgrazing, as well as firewood cutting, are the main threats.

Subspecies
Affiliation to Spotted Grasshopper-warbler (Locustella thoracica) and Baikal Grasshopper-warbler (Locustella davidi) suggested by presence of breast spotting. However, undertail-covert pattern, relatively slender bill and large size suggest that spotting perhaps is coincidental and that this may be a more primitive species.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

major (Brooks, 1872) - North-western Himalaya in northern Pakistan (Khagan Valley and Gilgit) and north-western India (north-eastern Kashmir, Ladakh, Zaskar).
innae (Portenko, 1955) - Western China (Kunlun Mts and western Altun Shan, in western and southern Xinjiang).
