Habitat
Grassland with scrubby undergrowth, scattered trees and shrubs, open forest and secondary growth. From sea-level - 1,350 m.

Range (Guide)

Bhutan (B) (NB), India (B), Nepal (B).

Foot of Himalayas from northern India (western Uttaranchal Pradesh) east, discontinuously, to Nepal and southern Bhutan.

Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Loss of shrubby grasslands and open forests through conversion to agriculture, collection of fuelwood, overgrazing of livestock, and burning and harvesting of grass for thatch, is the main threat.

Song is forced 'cheeeeeeeesum-zip-zip-zip'. Also, rapidly-repeated 'zip' notes.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Similar Species
Breeding Rufescent Prinia (Prinia rufescens) which has less sharply defined crown, narrower supercilium, less strongly rufous upperparts and whiter underparts. Non-breeding Ashy Prinia (Prinia socialis) which is larger and longer-tailed and lacks supercilium behind eye.
